BACKGROUND
Malaysia and Japan established the Malaysia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (MJEPA) on 13 December 2005.
MJEPA is Malaysia's first comprehensive Agreement and came into force on 13 July 2006

TRADE WITH JAPAN
In 2016:
Malaysia was Japan’s 10th largest trading partner.
Total trade with Japan contracted by 4.8% to RM120.26 billion (US$28.98 billion) from RM126.27 billion (US$32.46 billion) in 2015.
Exports to Japan decreased by 12.9% to reach RM63.28 billion (US$15.23 billion).
Imports increased by 6.3% to RM56.98 billion (US$13.75 billion).

TRADE IN GOODS
Under MJEPA both Malaysia and Japan will progressively reduce or eliminate tariffs on their respective industrial and agricultural products. Commitments by the countries are reflected in their Schedule of Commitments. General Notes of Tariff Reduction and Elimination.
How does your product enjoy the Preferential Duties
In order for your product to enjoy the preferential duties, it must fulfill the Rules of Origin criteria under MJEPA which is a Qualifying Value Content of 40% or Change in Tariff Classification.

SERVICES
MJEPA is a comprehensive agreement and it covers liberalization of Trade in Services as well. Japan will accord to Malaysia same treatment as that given to other FTA partners. Sectors of interest to Malaysia include business and professional services, education services, Communication services, Tourism and Travel related services and Health related and Social services.
