  jata  Malaysia's Free Trade Agreements

Media Statement : Trans-Pacific Partnership Leaders’ Meeting

The Leaders from the 12 Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) countries held a meeting in Beijing, China, 10 November 2014. The meeting was preceded by a Ministerial Meeting held 8 November.

The Leaders discussed the Report of the Ministers outlining the status of negotiations as well as the outstanding issues that need to be addressed. These include the sensitive areas of our Bumiputera agenda, intellectual property rights, environment and state-owned enterprises (SOEs). There was general consensus among Leaders that efforts should be intensified to conclude the negotiations as soon as possible.

Dato Sri Mohd Najib reiterated that Malaysia's priority is to ensure that the commitments in the TPPA will not compromise the national affirmative action policy which cuts across many chapters in the TPPA. He stressed that while the TPPA was an important undertaking and that Malaysia was committed to the negotiations, we will only accept an outcome which addresses our concerns and is beneficial to the country.

In the market access negotiations, Malaysia has made good progress with almost all trading partners. The initial assessment shows that a large part of our trade will be given duty free treatment immediately upon entry into force of the agreement.

Malaysia will continue to intensify domestic consultations with all stakeholders, including getting approval from Parliament in the coming months, to ensure that the final outcome will bring the best benefit possible for Malaysia and at the same time mitigating concerns that we have in the respective areas.
